What peak torque actually tells you

Peak torque, quoted in newton metres, is the maximum rotational force the base can apply to the wheel rim. It is a ceiling, not a setting. Most drivers run well below the maximum, because sustained high force is tiring over a long stint and because the extra output is wasted if the rig moves.

The practical consequence is that a rigidly mounted 12 Nm base often delivers more usable detail than a 21 Nm base clamped to a desk that flexes. Buy the frame and the base together, not the base alone.

Direct drive, belt, and gear

A direct-drive base mounts the wheel straight onto the motor shaft, so there is nothing between the motor and your hands. That is what makes small details, like the front tyres losing grip, readable.

Belt and gear-driven wheels put a reduction stage in between. They cost less and they are quieter to live with, but the mechanism smooths over the fine detail and adds a small amount of slack at the centre.

Quick release and mounting pattern

The quick release is the coupling between base and rim. It decides which wheels you can fit now and which you can move to later, so it constrains upgrades more than any other single spec.

The mounting pattern decides which rigs and desk clamps the base bolts to. A base with a standard bottom-mount hole pattern fits most aluminium-profile rigs; an unusual pattern may need an adapter plate.

Why do two wheelbases with the same Nm figure feel different?

Because the number is often measuring different things. Manufacturers do not quote torque on a single basis. Fanatec publishes holding torque and states peak overshoot separately, so its Podium DD reads 25 Nm holding with a 33 Nm peak. MOZA publishes peak torque. Thrustmaster publishes constant torque.

A holding figure and a peak figure are not interchangeable, and there is no published conversion between them. That is why every torque figure on this site carries the basis it was quoted on, and why we do not rank a holding number against a peak one.

Does a stronger wheelbase always feel better?

No. Peak torque is a ceiling, not a setting. Most drivers run well below the maximum, because sustained high force is tiring over a long stint.

The bigger constraint is the frame. Any movement in the rig is force the base produced that you never feel, so a rigidly mounted mid-force base often gives more usable detail than a stronger base clamped to a desk that flexes. Budget for the frame alongside the base, not after it.

Will this work on my console?

The expensive trap is that console compatibility is often conditional. A base sold as console compatible may only be recognised when a specific licensed wheel rim is attached, and the base alone will not work. Confirm the exact combination with the manufacturer before ordering.

Will my wheel rim fit this base?

Only if they share a quick release standard. The coupling between base and rim is the most common cross-brand incompatibility in sim racing, and it constrains upgrades more than any other single spec.
